The German citizenship test (Einbürgerungstest) is a key step in your naturalization journey. Here's everything you need to know to pass on your first attempt.

What is the Einbürgerungstest?

The test consists of 33 questions selected from a pool of 460 official questions published by BAMF (Bundesamt für Migration und Flüchtlinge). You need to answer at least 17 correctly to pass - that's just over 50%.

The questions cover three main categories:

  • 30 general questions about Germany
  • 3 questions specific to your Bundesland (state)

The Three Categories

1. Politik in der Demokratie (Politics)

Questions about Germany's political system, constitution, and rights. You'll learn about:

  • The Grundgesetz (Basic Law)
  • How elections work
  • The structure of government
  • Fundamental rights

2. Geschichte und Verantwortung (History)

Questions about German history, especially the 20th century:

  • The Weimar Republic
  • Nazi Germany and the Holocaust
  • Division and reunification
  • Post-war Germany

3. Mensch und Gesellschaft (Society)

Questions about daily life, culture, and social norms:

  • Religious freedom
  • Education system
  • Holidays and traditions
  • Social norms and values

How Long Should You Study?

Most people need 2-4 weeks of regular practice. If you're studying in your native language first, you may be ready even faster.

Here's a recommended study schedule:

  • Week 1-2: Learn all questions in your native language
  • Week 3: Review difficult questions, take practice exams
  • Week 4: Final review, focus on weak areas

Our Top Tips

  1. Study in your language first - Understanding the concepts matters more than memorizing German words. Learn what the questions mean before worrying about language.

  2. Focus on weak areas - Use practice tests to identify which categories need more work. Most people struggle with history questions.

  3. Take practice exams - Simulate real test conditions with 33 questions and a 60-minute timer. This builds confidence and test-taking stamina.

  4. Review mistakes - Learn from wrong answers, don't just move on. Understanding why an answer is correct helps you remember it.

  5. Study your Bundesland - Don't forget the 3 state-specific questions! These are often overlooked but are easy points if you prepare.

What to Expect on Test Day

  • Bring your passport or ID
  • Arrive 15 minutes early
  • You'll have 60 minutes for 33 questions
  • Multiple choice with 4 options each
  • Results typically arrive within 2-4 weeks
